DAY #3

Today is for exploring some of the countryside in New England.

I drove to Walden Pond State Reservation near Concord, MA

Henry David Thoreau lived and worked at Walden Pond for two years from 1845 to 1847.

I hiked the 1.7-mile trail that encircles the lake.
Here are a couple of views along the way.

In 1945 Roland Wells Robbins, an amateur historian and Thoreau enthusiast, discovered and excavated the foundation of Thoreau's chimney.

Here the outline of the cabin is noted.

This is the view of Walden Pond that Thoreau had from his cabin site.

This is a replica of his cabin.

Authors Ridge in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery on Bedford Street in Concord, MA is where Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel & Sophia Hawthorne, the Alcott Family, and Ralph Waldo Emerson and family are buried.

I finally gave up trying to find Hawthorne's grave.

In the afternoon I headed for New Hampshire - "Live Free or Die"

Near the town of Derry I visited the Robert Frost Farm.

The surrounding countryside is very scenic and the leaves are just starting to change colors.  I can certainly understand how this setting might  have inspired some his poetry.

I drove farther north to Concord, NH and checked into my hotel.
