DAY #4

This morning I did a walking tour of downtown Concord, the State Capitol of New Hampshire.

Here are some highlights of the walk.

The New Hampshire State House was completed in 1818 for the price of $82,000. It was built by Stuart J. Park. The New Hampshire state government consists of 400 representatives and 24 senators (making it the largest state legislature in the nation.

Granite State Candy Shoppe. It has been making excellent candy and ice cream since 1927.
At the end of my walk today, I had a chocolate truffle and strawberry ice cream - both excellent.

This interesting round building (built in 1888) is boarded up and in disrepair. A website suggests that it may have been a gasholder with a huge tank inside to store natural gas.

The downtown area of Concord is small and has few interesting buildings.
However, the homes I saw on the tour were architecturaly quite beautiful.

Here are a few I  found particularly exceptional.

At 62 North State Street is the Mary Baker Eddy (Christian Science Church founder) House, where she lived from 1889-1892.  She revised her primary work "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" here.

In the afternoon I drove to Dover, NH and had a late llunch at Newick's, a restaurant recommended by my friend Jim.

A bowl of seafood chowder, a lobster roll, and a beer were excellent.
The restuarant was between serving lunch and dinner, so I got a prime table at the window.

I then drove from Dover, NH to Portland, ME along Highway 1 and checked into my hotel.
